Fr Charles Law SJ

Fr Charles A Law, Jesuit educator, noted poet and social worker, passed away last Sunday evening. Fr Law came to Nepal in 1958, when he worked briefly at the newly-established St Xavier's School in Godavari, before heading to Kurseong in India to study theology. After his ordination to Catholic priesthood in 1964, he returned to Nepal to teach at St Xavier's School, Jawalakhel where he was the mainstay of the science program for nearly 25 years. Although he spent the most time in Kathmandu, Fr Law was passionately interested in rural Nepal. He spent six months at a school in Dolakha and four years teaching science in a high school in Parbat district. Fr Law was instrumental in founding St Xavier's College and was principal of its Intermediate in Science program. Under his initiative, the first bachelor's degree programme in social work was started in August 1996, and he was head of that department until he was named superior of the Jesuit Training Centre in Kupondole until a few months ago. Fr Law was also a noted poet and his work in English written in Nepal reflects his deep commitment to justice and his concern for the poor and the disadvantaged.
