Lukla airport still closed

Lukla airport was still closed Friday after a crash-landing of a Sita Air Dornier blocked the runway stranding hundreds of trekkers in Katmandu and Lukla.

Lukla airport opened on Saturday morning after being closed for two days after the runway was blocked by a disabled aircraft.

Stranded passengers started flying in and out on regular and extra flights. A Sita Air Dornier crash-landed on Thursday morning and blocked the runway stranding hundreds of trekkers in Katmandu and Lukla. Some airlines operated flights to Phaplu, a two-day walk south of Lukla, to take tourists in and out on Friday. Bad weather hampered a helicopter carrying civil aviation officials from landing in Lukla on Thursday itself.
