"Proof will come"

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said that proof that the army is still under government control will soon be public. The prime minister made the statement in a meeting with representatives of the civil society held on 7 August. "Proof that the army is under government control will surface in a few days," said PM Koirala amidst calls for the resignation of the Chief of Army Staff Pyar Jung Thapa.

Various representatives from the civil society led by Dr Debendra Raj Pandey submitted their demands today. Besides the call for the resignation of the chief of army the representatives have also asked for a fixed date for the constituent assembly, bringing the peace talks to a decisive end, dissolution of the present House of Representatives, and ensuring the implementation of the code of conduct and agreements made between the government and the Maoists.

Meanwhile the leader of the CPN-Maoist party Chairman Prachanda has stated that he will be meeting with the prime minister officially to clear out controversies surrounding the PM's statements about making a place for the king. PM Koirala's statement that the king should be given a place has brought serious condemnation from the Maoists as well as other partners in the seven party alliance. The leader of the Maoist party made the statement in a meeting held with the General Secretary of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal. Chairman Prachanda reportedly expressed concern over actions and statements made by various leaders from the seven-party alliance government with regards to the present peace process.
