Rum Day 2020
A liquor made by fermenting, then distilling sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice, rum is key to classic cocktails such as the Mojito, Piña colada, Mai tai, and Daiquiri. This Rum Day, learn more about the history of rum in Nepal and Nepali blends.
In Nepal, Nepal Distilleries Private Limited, the first licensed distillery, began producing Khukri Rum in 1959. At present, Nepal Distilleries produces Khukri Rum, Khukri Spice, Coronation Rum and Khukri XXX Rum, which are imported to Europe, Australia, as well as some countries in East Asia. Khukri XXX Rum recently won the Gold award in the Rum category at The London Spirits Competition 2020.
The natural conditions in Nepal, especially in Kathmandu, are ideal for the production of fine rums. Cool temperatures and the availability of fresh spring water makes the rum distinct as colder temperatures contribute to a slow ageing process. Similarly, fresh spring water carries the required minerals, and ideal pH value to produce rum.
