In response to a writ filed in February, the Supreme Court has issued a directive at the government to conduct local elections as soon as possible.

The appeal had sought explanation of Article 131 of the interim constitution, to which the phrase "elections for local bodies shall be conducted" was added as amendment in 2008.

Ever since the last representatives' terms ended on 16 July 2002, administrative posts at local bodies have remained vacant, and there have been no re-elections since then.
