The oath-taking ceremony for Chief Justice to be sworn in as the next prime minister has been postponed from Wednesday night to 9am on 14 March.
Just as the parties shuttled to Shital Niwas at midnight and seemed prepared to swear in Khil Raj Regmi as the chairman of the electoral council, it was confirmed that the ceremony would take place the next morning.
Earlier on Wednesday evening, the four main political powers finally signed on a 11-point document detailing a controversial agreement to make sitting Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi leader of an election government. The document has two parts: one pertaining to the formation of the government and the other to amend the constitution to make this unusual step legitimate.
Wednesday’s agreement will allow the children of Nepali citizens to get citizenship, and therefore be eligible to vote. The agreement also allows one Maoist to be a Colonel and two Lt Colonels in the Nepal Army. The agreement has set 20 June as the date for elections, even though it will fall in beginning of the monsoon. The Constituent Assembly will have 491 members, out of whom 240 will be directly elected, 240 will get proportional representation, and 11 will be nominated by the CJ-PM's government.
