Nepal's Shakti Samuha has been awarded with the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award. Shankti Samuha is Nepal's first NGO established and run by victims of trafficking.

Manila-based Ramon Magsaysay Awards Foundation announced on 24 June Shakti Samuha along with two other individuals and organisations as this year's awardees which

includes a Filipino doctor Ernesto Domingo, Afghanistan's first and only female governor Habiba Sarabi, Lahpai Seng Raw from Myanmar and Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi

from Indonesia.

Talking to Himalkhabar, Sunita Danuwar president of Shakti Samuha said that a team from Philippines had visited the organisation

last year. She added, "15 days ago they asked me to mail our organisation's profile and this morning I got a mail saying we were the winners of Magsaysay 2013."

Magsaysay foundation has praised the founders and members for their exemplary work to abolish human trafficking and help survivors to live with dignity and pride.  .

After Sunita Danuwar thanked all her supporters for their continuous encouragement and said that such an honour has motivated Shakti Samuha to work further against human trafficking.

The award ceremony will be held on 31 August at the Philippines capital Manila.

Mahesh Chandra Regmi, Bharatdutta Koirala, Dr. Sanduk Ruit and Mahabir Pun have been honored with this prestigious Magsaysay award previously from Nepal.
