UCPN Maoist's Onsari Gharti Magar has become the first female Speaker of the Parliament. 
Magar was unanimously elected after her contender Anuradha Thapa of the Nepal Workers' and Peasants' Party (NWPP) withdrew her candidacy.
A former Maoist guerrilla, Magar was on the frontlines of many crucial battles. She was seven months-pregnant when she fought in the battle of Pakhapani in Rolpa in 1999.
Eleven days later, still recovering from injuries, she gave birth to her daughter. With an infant on her back, Magar went back to the field four months later and took part in the attack on Ghartigau police station.
Magar was among the 10 women who secured seats in the previous parliament through direct polls. She also went on to serve as the Vice Chair of the second Constituent Assembly (CA) and has also served as the Minister of Youth and Sports in former Prime Minister Jhal Nath Khanal's cabinet in 2011.
Vice Chairperson of CPN-UML Bidhya Bhandari had proposed Magar's name for the post. RPP-N’s Kunti Shahi and Bahujan Samajwadi party’s Biswendra Paswan had seconded it.
While the main opposition party Nepali Congress (NC) decided not to field its candidates for the post of Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the NWPP, which supported CPN-UML chair KP Sharma Oli during the formation of the government had announced candidacy for both the posts on Friday.
Anuradha Thapa Magar and Dilli Prasad Kafle of NWPP had registered their candidacy for Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively.
