At least 30 people, including a child, were killed when an overcrowded bus veered off the road in Rasuwa district on Tuesday.

Of the deceased, 17 are men and 12 are women. Rasuwa's CDO Shiva Ram Gelal said the death toll could as 45 more people were injured with some of them in critical condition.

The bus, which was heading towards Chilime from Kathmandu, had fallen about 500 metres down the road in Ramche village of Rasuwa district around the noon.

The highway where the accident occurred is the only operational Nepal-Tibet trade route, which was recently reopened in the wake of India's blockade against the Himalayan country. The Pasang Lhamu Highway was blocked at several parts for almost six months after the April earthquake.

National News Agency quoted eye-witnesses saying the bus slipped after the earthen edge of the road subsided. Nepal Army, police, Armed Police Force and locals had rescued the injured and rushed them to Dhunche and Kathmandu.

The bus (Na 3 Kha 5706) was overcrowded because of a severe fuel shortage caused by India's blockade, according to Gelal.

After India tightened fuel supply to the earthquake-ravaged Nepal citing security concerns due to protests by Madhesi people near the border between two countries, Nepalis are now facing tough time in travelling.

Even tourists are forced to travel by sitting on the hoods of buses on mountainous roads.

After an Indian national was killed in police firing in Birganj on Monday, India has hinted at further tightening the blockade. But New Delhi has called it just 'a disruption of supplies' due to 'protests on the Nepali side'.
