Nepal earned a total of Rs29.324 billion from electricity exports to India and Bangladesh in the fiscal year 2025/26. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has 12,000MW of projects in the pipeline, but a new VAT on customers consuming more than 150 units per month has dampened use. NEA is working on reducing power tariffs to compensate. Minister for Energy Biraj Bhakta Shrestha says this week generation capacity and increasing exports are not as important as boosting domestic consumption.
