Forty-six-year-old Amiran is learning to read and write. She spends two hours each morning and evening studying together with her daughter and grandson. The humiliation and discrimination this Nepalganj resident was subjected to in various government offices only added to her resolve to get an education. She started learning to read and write with the help of her 15-year-old daughter, Najra Bano. Soon, other women in the community joined her and Amiran's example has encouraged 50 women from her community to become literate. " I don't feel shy to learn along with my grandson rather I feel proud," said Amiran. She is a rarity in the mid-western district of Banke wher nearly 90 percent of the Muslim are illiterate. "This is a welcome move. We are also trying to find ways to support such initiative," said Mohammed Siddiqui, a noted social worker from Nepalganj.
