South Asian Games 2010 have officially begun. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed inaugurated the 11th South Asian Games at Banga Bandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on Friday evening.

Hasina’s address followed a two-hour long opening ceremony, including lighting of the torch.

Nearly 18,00 atheletes from eight countries will be taking part in 23 sporting categories featured in the 12-day long bi-annual event. Nepal has sent a team of 479 people.

Despite the earlier elevator incident, things are looking up for the Nepali players. Nepali women’s football team won their first match defeating Bangladesh by 1-0. Women’s football is being hosted in the South Asian Games for the first time. Nepal will play against Sri Lanka in the second game on 2 February.
