<figure><img src="https://superdesk-pro-c.s3.amazonaws.com/sd-nepalitimes/2022110911110/636b7a719c7e80680e06475fjpeg.jpg" alt="" width="4096" height="2730"/><figcaption>Photo: BIKRAM RAI</figcaption></figure>We are in for the long-haul with <a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/opinion/what-is-novel-about-the-novel-coronavirus/" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.nepalitimes.com/opinion/what-is-novel-about-the-novel-coronavirus/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1585631034431000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE0aoyspsOeHIBjtexE2rB8xE3KOw">COVID-19</a>, as the rotating apex of the pandemic now jumps across the Atlantic to North America.Regardless of how this disease continues to play out this northern hemisphere summer, <a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/banner/why-nepal-must-watch-about-coronavirus-but-not-panic/" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.nepalitimes.com/banner/why-nepal-must-watch-about-coronavirus-but-not-panic/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1585631034431000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGsF9kCG9HdHTkbHnhJCph-YXvjyg">we in Nepal</a> and elsewhere will still be dealing with it for the rest of 2020. All models predict there will be ‘hill and valley’ outbreaks as the epidemic peaks and falls.Widespread testing, <a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/banner/covid-19-revives-nepals-wash-drive/" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.nepalitimes.com/banner/covid-19-revives-nepals-wash-drive/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1585631034431000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHYGCrEzyig3O9ciAuasBRIgLs7UA">hand washing</a>, physical distancing and masks in certain situations will certainly make a difference together with lockdowns of the kind we are going through.An effective vaccine will be the game-changer, but it is still at least a year away if we are lucky. In the meantime a potent  drug therapy antidote against this disease would be most welcome.Labs in China, Italy, France, USA, the UK and other countries are doing drug trials even as they deal with the onslaught of the disease. Once the disease is established, there is no other way but to do proper drug trials to treat the disease.The <a href="https://www.who.int/dg/speeches/detail/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-on-covid-19---27-march-2020" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.who.int/dg/speeches/detail/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-on-covid-19---27-march-2020&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1585631034431000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGcLzzT197xKt0zj3Z9v_q9ITSVtg">World Health Organization (WHO)</a> has come up with an  innovative idea of carrying out what it calls a public health emergency ‘Solidarity’ trial – an international, randomised trial of hospitalised patients with COVID-19.This is ground-breaking because rich and poor countries will be involved in the study, and crucially, it is being carried out in the midst of the pandemic. There was a time when studies like these would be considered after the dust settled.Difficult as it may be, the pandemic is the best time to find a treatment so that more people can benefit. Large sample sizes are needed for conclusions from such a study to be robust and reliable. Findings from a trial using 100 patients will be less certain than a study which employs 1,000.Norway, South Africa, Argentina, and Iran among others have already signed up for the study which has just begun. The WHO is inviting many countries to participate in Solidarity trials so that the results can be generalised and trustworthy.Because the study is being carried out ‘in the heat of the battle’ WHO has kept the study very simple. The trial procedures are greatly simplified, and no paperwork is required. Once the institution has obtained national approval and informed consent from the patient, electronic data entry takes a few minutes.These modern studies using electronic data entry versus paperwork are really not new in countries in South Asia including Nepal which have taken part in state-of–the art collaborative studies before.This WHO COVID-19 trial has four drug arms: Remdesivir, Kaletra (2 anti-HIV drugs), Interferon and Kaletra, and Chloroquin or hydroxychloroquin. All patients will receive the standard of care in their country, and in addition will be randomised to  one of the arms.These drugs are not new and have been used against various viral and parasitical diseases in the past. For example, chloroquin has been used for many decades against malaria. Doctors will be familiar with these repurposed drugs and their side-effects which sometimes can  be worse than the treatment. Hence the importance of a robust drug trial.The final outcomes to determine which is the best choice, if any, among these four arms have also been kept clear-cut: number of deaths, ventilator use, and number of days in hospital.Because this is a WHO-lead practical study focusing on helping resource-limited settings, it is important that countries in South Asia including Nepal be involved. Funding may not necessarily be a problem.  Many countries in South Asia can at least be randomised to chlorquin or hydroxycholorquin which are not expensive to see if this drug works against COVID-19 or not.President Trump said he “felt good” about hydoxychloroquin, but this needs scientific backing which does not exist yet. The published French study that concluded usefulness of chloroquin had a very small sample size, did not report clinical outcomes and was not randomised to be scientifically sound.Similarly the Chinese study using Kaletra and recently reported in the <a href="https://www.nejm.org/" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.nejm.org/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1585631034431000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHGStErHdTfc8Gm40_rBDqZh_c9Mg">New England Journal of Medicine</a> also had shortcomings. Hence the need for a larger sample size which the WHO’s Solidarity trial is poised to do.In Nepal, the best-placed institution to help carry out such an important study with potentially multiple hospitals involved is the Nepal Health Research Council ( NHRC), a revered 30-year-old institution.True, Nepal has only three COVID-19 patients in hospitals right now, but the possibility of this number growing exponentially soon cannot easily be dismissed. It is best to get the practical research system in place, especially because the WHO will welcome the move, and may help with the process so that we may be better able to help our patients with useful, and not harmful, drugs.It will also give NHRC a chance to help nurture the talent of a young Nepali researcher to help drive this study in Nepal, coordinating with the different hospitals. Countries cooperating to find COVID-19 cure

Photo: FLIGHTRADAR24.COM</figcaption></figure>Full marks to the Nepal government for <a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/banner/nepal-goes-into-lockdown-for-a-week/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">imposing the much tougher lockdown</a> that we are living under since 6AM today. <a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/banner/kathmandu-under-semi-lockdown/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">As of Monday afternoon</a> it was still possible for Kathmanduites to get a suit tailor-made, meet friends for chiya and chat, or celebrate a birthday at a favourite restaurant. That made no sense: pandemics demand much more than half-measures.Inexplicably the <a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/editorial/this-is-a-test/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">coronavirus has not walloped Nepal yet</a> while it has devastated countries from our northern neighbour China to Italy and the United States. Shops providing essential goods will remain open but which ones and what hours they will work is still to be seen. Wisely, officials have decided to not limit shopping hours, otherwise we would likely have seen a rush on stores that would negate the entire point of <a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/nt/about-town/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">social distancing</a>  Still, measures need to be put in place to ensure that people do not get into the habit of strolling over to their local store daily to leaf through rayoko sag.We can expect most Nepalis to understand the i<a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/here-now/coronavirus-and-the-world-wide-web/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nconvenience of living under lockdown</a> and do their part. In turn, the government must exhibit true leadership by encouraging and informing us. The media must be permitted to continue its essential work of providing updates, and insights. Yet, we should not have to wait for an enterprising journalist to reveal that the government <a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/latest/wait-and-watch/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has tested fewer than half of the suspected</a> COVID-19 cases than we were led to believe. Concealing information further fuels conspiracy theories, rumour-mongering and the ‘fake news’.Canada’s prime minister is in self-isolation since his wife tested positive more than a week ago. Yet he is giving daily press briefings to update the situation there (where there have been 24 deaths and 2,049 confirmed cases at the time of writing). We are not recommending that Prime Minister Oli do the same, as he still needs to recuperate from his recent kidney transplant. This regular flow of credible information would be an important step toward stifling the ill-informed or ill-intentioned voices that are being amplified via social media.One of the first tasks of that spokesperson could be to explain what is expected of businesses, big and small, and ordinary people during the lockdown — and the consequences if those rules are not followed. What are the measures authorities are now taking <a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/opinion/global-thinking-and-local-action-on-coronavirus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to fight COVID-19</a>?We ‘know’ unofficially that testing is being broadened but it is unclear exactly by how much and to who. If that measure fails to identify new cases, what might the next steps be? If we are all in this journey together we deserve to know which direction we are moving in.It is heartening to see funds established to finance the response of the health care sector in what is sure to be a long fight against the coronavirus. The poorest of the poor should not be left to fend for themselves, especially if economic assistance is provided to industries.Local governments across Nepal have been working overtime in recent weeks to establish <a href="https://www.nepalitimes.com/latest/nepal-armys-quarantine-zone/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">isolation wards in case of an outbreak</a>  If we all do our part to respect the current lockdown, thanks to the measures that came into force today it is now much more likely that we will not witness the sad spectacle of those facilities filling up.

Nepal locked down, now what?

Health officials said they have also tracked down friends and relatives who had come in contact with the student and have taken nose and throat swabs, and confined them to self-isolation as well.However, Dhakal refused to disclose if passengers seated around the student on both flights, the airport officials and driver from the airport had been traced and contacted. QR650 on 17 March had 158 passengers and 12 crew.“We are trying to track them down and notify them to be tested,” Minister Dhakal said. However health ministry officials disclosed privately that the government had not taken any action yet to inform the airline about her flights, get her seat number on both flights. Fenerbahçe Beko won the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague finals in Abu Dhabi, held 23-25 May, defeating Monaco 81-70 in the final. Olympiacos, who defeated Panathinaikos 97-93, finished the series in third place. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final match, Nigel Hayes-Davis from Fenerbahçe Beko, received a prize of 1,000,000 Miles&amp;Smiles from Turkish Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer Ahmet Olmuştur. The carrier has been the title sponsor of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, a top tier tournament, since 2010.

In the black and white photograph, General Wangdu smiles broadly in front of the dusty cactus garden in Kathmandu’s Annapurna Hotel. With an ill-fitting jacket and shaggy hair he looks benign enough, but this was the last leader of the Tibetan freedom fighters who led the resistance against the Chinese from their remote mountain hideouts in <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/here-now/comings-and-goings-in-mustang">Mustang</a>. Five months later, Wangdu was dead. Snapped in March 1974, I had only recently arrived in Nepal. How did I meet this legendary fighter? Possibly with his devoted camp follower, Lynne Klapecki, and probably in the Om Restaurant near Freak Street which was the preferred <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/banner/hippie-trail-nostalgia-in-kathmandu">hippie hang-out</a>. Om Lobsang and his brother Yeshe were <a href="https://archive.nepalitimes.com/page/earthquake-brings-back-memories-of-camps-for-tibetan-refugees">refugees from East Tibet </a>whose cafe offered a friendly welcome and<a href="https://nepalitimes.com/multimedia/momo-loco"> the best momos</a> - they became my in-laws after I married their eldest brother Tenzin, but that was a decade later.&nbsp;  <figure> <img src="https://publisher-publish.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/pb-nepalitimes/swp/asv65r/media/2025052403054_4573b34282b0f5395c007243d6bef12c7ba76bfd520419e994cdcea048d795a1.jpg" data-media-id="editor_4" data-image-id="2025052403054_4573b34282b0f5395c007243d6bef12c7ba76bfd520419e994cdcea048d795a1" data-rendition-name="original" width="1000" height="1583" loading="lazy" alt="The last days of the Khampa NT"> <figcaption>Photo: LISA CHOEGYAL</figcaption> </figure>  Wangdu’s English was enthusiastically rudimentary, but even riding around town with him on the back of an aging <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/here-now/kathmandu-s-new-motorbike-museum">motorbike</a>, he was a commanding presence. Always flanked by armed outriders, impressive scars marked his forearms and a pistol hung from the cord around his neck. A charismatic guerrilla leader, Wangdu was celebrated by his followers for his tough commitment and respected for his measured pragmatism. He seemed so young to have shouldered such a responsibility of command, leading hundreds of hardened <a href="https://archive.nepalitimes.com/article/nation/50-years-after-the%20raid-into-Tibet,1012#google_vignette">Khampa combatants </a>through what had been a particularly <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/news/heavy-snowfall-over-nepal-himalaya">brutal winter in Mustang</a>, the last bastion to hold out against the Chinese invasion of their Tibetan homeland.&nbsp; The freedom fighters of Tibet, known as the Chushi-Gangdruk, had emerged to resist the <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/editorial/territorialism">Chinese takeover</a> of Tibet during the 1950s. Estimated to be 80,000-strong at the time of <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/here-now/what-or-who-after-the-dalai-lama">the Dalai Lama</a>’s final escape to India in 1959, the sheer number of Chinese deployed into Tibet eventually forced the Chushi-Gangdruk to retreat to Mustang, From this high Himalayan stronghold, they continued cross-border raids on the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) throughout the 1960s.  <figure> <img src="https://publisher-publish.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/pb-nepalitimes/swp/asv65r/media/2025052403054_8a4a935ba25ae79dc3a63bb5c14626927020e5ec098093c45ccb9a5982e009fd.jpg" data-media-id="editor_10" data-image-id="2025052403054_8a4a935ba25ae79dc3a63bb5c14626927020e5ec098093c45ccb9a5982e009fd" data-rendition-name="original" width="1114" height="676" loading="lazy" alt="The last days of the Khampa NT"> <figcaption>Guerrillas known as the Chushi-Gangdruk emerged to resist the Chinese annexation of Tibet during the 1950s. Photo courtesy: MIKEL DUNHAM</figcaption> </figure>  Their Kathmandu base was a small discreet lodge in a back lane near Rani Pokhari. Sipping sweet tea from a blue mug with a chipped lid, I sat bemused in a corner of the Mustang Hotel room whilst Wangdu and his cohorts received a battered brown suitcase from their CIA connection, a tousle-haired American in a leather jacket. Heaved onto the dingy bedspread that covered the thin mattress, it was clicked open to reveal piles of neatly stacked dollar bills.&nbsp; I cannot think why Wangdu allowed me to witness this handover but I was clearly no threat, a newly arrived world traveller with no understanding of the stakes nor any Nepali or <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/multimedia/tibetan-music-in-nepals-sacred-valley">Tibetan language</a>. Despite armed guards in the corridor,Wangdu radiated confidence and bravado, and there was a practiced familiarity to the tense transaction. This deadly dance for many years had been funded by the Americans, tolerated by <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/here-now/the-kingdom-within-a-republic">Mustang’s residents</a>, and permitted by King Mahendra and the Nepali authorities who it suited to turn a blind eye.&nbsp; But Mahendra died in 1972, and times were changing. Richard Nixon’s ping-pong diplomacy thawed the cold war and signalled a fresh entente with China. Nepal’s yet-to-be-crowned <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/here-now/if-birendra-was-alive-nepal-could-still-be-a-monarchy">King Birendra </a>was under pressure to curb the irritating incursions against the PLA launched from the Nepali territory of Mustang. Keen to appease his northern neighbour, on several occasions the King summoned Wangdu for peace talks but, despite increasingly overwhelming odds, Wangdu refused to surrender.&nbsp;  <figure> <img src="https://publisher-publish.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/pb-nepalitimes/swp/asv65r/media/2025052403054_a8efd5cfb92cd997bd7cb74296a936fef46e2f7428f9cd642b03f1ac4ea11ecb.jpg" data-media-id="editor_14" data-image-id="2025052403054_a8efd5cfb92cd997bd7cb74296a936fef46e2f7428f9cd642b03f1ac4ea11ecb" data-rendition-name="original" width="1055" height="885" loading="lazy" alt="The last days of the Khampa NT"> <figcaption>General Wangdu flanked by two Tibetan resistance fighters in Mustang in the 1970s. Photo courtesy: RAJRNDRA KUNWAR</figcaption> </figure>  While I naively rode pillion around Kathmandu in the spring sunshine, Wangdu was in the midst of what turned out to be his final round of negotiations with the Nepal government. Refusing to cease hostilities with the Chinese, Wangdu must have suspected the cost of his decision, making his cheerful smile in the photograph all the more poignant and brave. It was only much later that I appreciated the significance of the moment. Wangdu had been sent to replace the first resistance leader in Mustang, Baba Gen Yeshe, a much derided corrupt character who stole money meant for his troops and exploited fleeing refugees by seizing their treasures. Baba Gen Yeshe never forgave Wangdu,and sought revenge in May 1974 by betraying him and his commanders to the Nepal authorities. It is equally possible – during that last, <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/multimedia/the-human-cost-of-nepal-s-yarsa-gold-rush?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR31-Cqw8oyIwMPzf_35e4Skr0ululJvLf3_vDkzHn-AYG2h8uPw2rqqErg_aem_tGVn5coY1-jA7fze_xqhew">desolate winter </a>– that he made the decision to go out in glory rather than admit defeat. Over the last fifteen years, Wangdu had experienced Tibet’s organized resistance being squeezed and shoved around by every conceivable outside force.&nbsp; First they had been pushed out of their own country by the PLA; then they had been refused sanction while on <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/opinion/borderlines/nepal-india-trans-boundary-bonds?fbclid=IwAR0PpJ5zUEbwdug3g_U3ar6FUugngRY0S8Tl2v_7wqzrsHmXWcXsKjvL4t4">Indian soil</a>; then they were abandoned by the Americans because, apparently, Nixon wanted to make friends with Wangdu’s mortal enemies, the communists; then they had been betrayed by the vampiric Baba Gen Yeshe – a Tibetan and, even worse, a fellow Khampa; and now, finally Wangdu’s army was being evicted by the Nepalis. One thing was certain: Wangdu was a warrior. Wangdu and six of his exhausted party were killed on their horses by <a href="https://archive.nepalitimes.com/news.php?id=7270">the Royal Nepal Army</a> on the brink of escape. The officer in charge, Aditya SJB Rana, cleverly predicted their route into India after they failed to silence a police radio in Yari. A carefully laid ambush trapped them near the summit of the Tinker Pass in Darchula,at 5,000 meters the highest military operation of its time. The Last Days of the Khampa

Starting 17 September Turkish Airlines will fly daily to Seville, one of Spain’s major tourist draws. This is Turkish’s sixth destination in Spain after Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga, and Bilbao. Seville is in the Andalusia region on Spain’s south coast with a rich Moor history. There are approximately 30,000 Nepalis living in Spain.&nbsp;

The newly-formed Himalayan Art Council is set to launch Nepal’s National Art Protection Platform that seeks to preserve <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/banner/the-history-of-heritage">Nepal’s unique cultural heritage </a>using<a href="https://nepalitimes.com/here-now/artificial-censorship"> AI-powered tools</a>. The Council seeks to safeguard <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/banner/nepali-art-going-places">Nepali art works</a> from neglect, theft and counterfeiting as well as preserve existing artwork and celebrate living masters by giving them a cultural space to continue the <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/banner/sacred-survival">sacred art traditions</a>. "We are introducing a new digital platform designed to preserve, verify and elevate <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/banner/nepals-new-generation-of-alternative-artists">Nepal’s art for generations to come,</a>” says a statement from the Council, adding that the digital platform will use AI told for authentication and blockchain to keep track of works of art. Artists can now be protected by <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/multimedia/ayo-ai?fbclid=IwAR1uwmTVq4gUB70ljfRezjzukD9ArWXPuMnUikopeQ8PoiZMjicToPSwhKE&amp;=1">AI tools</a> that detect forgeries, identify their work even when unsigned, and ensure they receive proper recognition and credit. The archives will be searchable with translated inscription and interactive guides. Says curator Meena Lama: “AI and blockchains are tools that give us the power to detect fakes and identify unsigned paintings and track every piece. This curated collection is a living tribute to <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/here-now/when-yaks-go-so-does-culture">Himalayan culture</a> with economic depictions of deities, mandala and sacred narratives. The exhibition at <a href="https://nepalitimes.com/multimedia/a-portal-into-patan-s-past-and-present">Patan Museum</a> also provides an opportunity to meet painters and custodians of art and culture. Artist Kailash K Shrestha of Artudio has spent decades promoting thankha and paubha traditions because of their beauty and devotional meaning. But he also says artists are underpaid, exploited and ignored.
