There are 2.14 million child laborers in Nepal, and a majority of them are girls, according to a report made public recently.
Joint secretary at the Ministry of Labor and Transport Management Purna Chandra Bhattarai made a report public amid a function in the capital today and urged all to support the government to end the practice of child labor.
According to the National Labor Survey made public by the Ministry, a total of 48.4 per cent of children forced in child labor are from rural areas. The report states that 27.7 per cent of them are of 5-9 years age group, 51.3 per cent of 10-14 years age group and 24 per cent of 15-17 years age group.
The government data shows that there are around 5,000 street children in the country and 1,300 of them are only in Kathmandu. The government claimed that the child labor has been controlled and more children have been getting access to education compared to the past years.
