The Business Advisory Committee of the Parliament has recommended the date to hold the election for the prime minister on 10 February.
Constituent Assembly Speaker Surya Bahadur Thapa read out the letter passed by the Parliament Secretariat, proposing a date for the prime minister’s election and requested Home Minister Madhav Ghimire to ask the house for its approval. The proposal was approved unanimously.
The Parliament Secretariat had received an official letter from the office of the President on Monday, requesting to start the procedure to form a majority government. The decision was in line with the Article 38 (2) of the Interim Constitution.
The office of the President initiated the process after the parties failed to forge understanding for a consensus government within the given deadline of 2 February.
Nepali Congress (NC) President and Parliamentary Party leader Sushil Koirala is the only candidate to put his name forward for the prime minister’s chair. NC has initiated talks to garner support for a majority government with the 30 parties of the CA. So far about half of the parties have expressed their support for a NC-led majority government.
Even thuough CPN-UML leader KP Sharma Oli has been elected the Parliamentary Party leader of the second largest party, the party has not put forward his candidacy. UCPN (Maoist) and RPP-Nepal, the third and fourth largest parties in the CA, have announced that they will stay in the opposition.
