The sub-committee under the Constitutional Committee on Tuesday reached an agreement to adopt a bicameral parliament, with the Maoists backing off from their previous demand for a unicameral legislative system in the centre.
The parties have reached an agreement to have a bicameral legislature at the federal centre and unicameral legislatures in the provinces. However, the sizes of the legislatures and the basis on which they will be constituted are yet to be finalised. The sub-committee also settled on titles for the legislatures. The central legislatures will be called the National and the House of Representatives, while each provincial legislature will be a House of Representatives.
The sub-committee is expected to resolve outstanding issues relevant to the new constitution by mid-March.
