The top leaders also promised to find solutions to disputes over state delineation by taking into account aspirations of the people as well as the need and welfare of the nation.
After the meeting of a special committee formed by the Constituent Assembly (CA) to resolve disputes over state-restructuring, the NC President Sushil Koirala read out a press release at a hastily-called press meet in the Singha Durbar: "For the first time in Nepal's history, the process of writing a new constitution through the Constituent Assembly (CA) elected by the people is in its final stage and the nation expects us to make it a success."
The CPN (UML) Chair KP Oli, the UCPN (M) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal and the MJF (D) Chair Bijaya Gachhadar have also signed the press release. The top leaders tried to calm the people's fears a day after protests over boundaries of federal provinces turned violent in Surkhet. The local administration had to impose a curfew to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control on Monday, and two protesters were killed in police firing while one died in a stampede.
In Bardiya, the Tharus have called an indefinite general strike from Tuesday demanding an autonomous Tharu province. In Karnali, protests continue in all districts against integration of the country's most backward region with the far-western province. They have demanded an autonomous Karnali province.
Protests also erupted in Rukum, Baglung and some other districts which were going to be cut in half. In the east, the Limbuwan party warned of an agitation demanding an autonomous province comprising nine districts east of the Kosi River. Kumar Lingden of the Limbuwan party has said that the eastern province with 14 districts in it is too big.
