Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has become the party's parliamentary leader.

Three-time Prime Minister Deuba is known to be a veteran political coup-maker with a reputation for toppling incumbents.

Deuba, 69, once again defeated his arch-rival Ram Chandra Poudel to become the PP leader of Nepal's largest political party. Last month, he had defeated Poudel to win the party presidency for the first time in his decades-long political career. Although he had become Prime Minister 20 years ago, Deuba had never been the party president until last month.

Of the total 206 NC members in Parliament, 139 members voted for him. Poudel received only 67 votes. After winning the second party election in just one month, he said: "The NC will now be a strong opposition party."
