Madhesi Front leader Mahant Thakur submits memorandum to PM KP Oli on Friday. Photo: RSSThe Madhesi Front has threatened to intensify protests if the Big Three political parties do not agree to its demands by mid April.
Submitting a memorandum to Prime Minister KP Oli in Kathmandu on Friday, the Front asked the ruling UML-UCPN (M) and the main opposition NC to address its demands in one month's time.
"We will otherwise be compelled to call for a more intense and decisive struggle," reads a press statement released by the Front.
The Front, a coalition of seven Madhes-based parties, had recently spearheaded a six-month-long strike in Nepal's southern plains region to put pressure on the Big Three to amend the new constitution.
The Front is against several provisions of the constitution, and most importantly the insertion of five Tarai districts (Sunsari, Morang, Jhapa, Kailali and Kanchanpur) in two hill states, demanding that they instead be placed in two Madhes states. Madhesi leaders say the exclusion of the five Tarai districts from Madhes states will leave Madhes people under-represented in Parliament and other state organs.
The Big Three parties have agreed to re-adjust boundaries of federal states, but are against the creation of just two Madhes provinces covering the whole Tarai.
After receiving the memorandum, PM Oli invited Madhesi leaders to a meeting scheduled for this evening. The two sides are expected to discuss the scope and jurisdiction of a mechanism proposed by the Big Three to revise federal boundaries.
This is the first time the Big Three and the Front are meeting for political negotiations since their last talk failed more than two months ago.
