Stones from the top of Mt Everest have been taken to the Dead Sea in Israel as part of a project called "Mount Everest and Dead Sea Stones Exchange" that brought stones from the Dead Sea to the Khumbu last month.
The monuments in the two countries were put up by the Israeli Embassy in Kathmandu and the Nepal Embassy in Israel to promote the cultural and natural heritage of the countries, and also to mark the bilateral relations between Israel and Nepal. Nepal was one of the first countries to establish bilateral relations with Israel in 1960.
A monument that has embedded stones from Mt Everest was established at the premises of Dead Sea on 30 May and the ceremony was held at the Ecological Park in the southern part of the Dead Sea. Uzi Landau, Israel Tourism Minister, Prahlad Kumar Prasai, Nepali Ambassador to Israel, Dov Litvinoff, Head of Tamar Region, Nadav Ben-Yehuda, a mountaineer, diplomats and other distinguished guests graced the ceremony.
In the first phase of the project, the stones brought from Dead Sea, Israel, were installed as a monument in the headquarters of Sagarmatha National Park in Namche Bazaar, Mt Everest Region, on 23 April 2013.
