After a long wait, the government has finally set up a five-member committee to implement Right to Information (RTI) Act 2064.
The Committee is chaired by Dhruba Prasad Sharma, Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communication.
Speaking at a press meet on Monday, the Ministry's spokesperson Uma Kanta Parajuli said that it was essential to safeguard rights of the people to have an access to information.
Rights activists had been pressing the government to form a mechanism so that the Act could be enforced. The Act ensures citizens' right to access information of public interest if denied by the government officials and public post holders.
Similarly, the government has formed another five-member committee under the Press Council Nepal to organise the online media.
