Bara's district headquarters Kalaiya has returned to normalcy following an agreement between the administration and the locals.

Kalaiya was tense after the death of the seven-year-old rape victim Puja Sah. The locals had been blocking the main intersection of Kalaiya demanding compensation for Puja's family, investigation into all rape cases and beefing up security to save other girls. They had launched Beti Bachao Andolan (Save our daughters campaign).

Puja's last rites were performed on Saturday following an agreement between Bara District Administration Office (DAO) and representatives of Beti Bachao Andolan. The deal includes commitment to investigate all recent rape and murder cases, recommendation for compensation for the victim's family, maximum punishment for the guilty, installation of CCTV cameras in Kalaiya, among others.

After the deal was inked, Kalaiya's main intersection reopened. The local residents of Kalaiya had blocked the intersection since Wednesday by placing Puja's dead body on the ground.

Thousands of people attended Puja's last rites performed on the bank of Tengraha river.

Puja had gone missing on 20 February and was found raped the next morning.  She succumbed to her injuries on 8 March after being hospitalized for more than two weeks. Her death sparked protests with activists and civil society members taking to the streets even in the capital.

Police have arrested Kanhai Gupta, 28, of Kalaiya-4, on the charge of raping Puja. Police say he committed the crime under the influence of alcohol.
