The Maoists have urged the Nepali Congress to support an extension of UNMIN's term till 28 May, 2011. The issue was discussed during a meeting of the top leaders of the two party held at the residence of the NC President Sushil Koirala in Maharajgunj today.
Vice-Chairman of the Maoist, Narayan Kaji Shrestha said that his party was for extending UNMIN term until the peace process and constitution writing are concluded.
The Nepali Congress, on the other hand, proposed amending UNMIN's mandate before extending its term. NC central member Prakash Sharan Mahat said that his party was not against an extension but wanted to limit UNMIN from monitoring the Nepal Army.
But, the Maoist party reiterated that as its fighters and Nepal Army were under the supervision of the UNMIN following the comprehensive peace accord, and the arrangement should be continued accordingly.
