The Ministry of Land Reform and Management has already begun the process for measuring the height of world’s tallest peak Mt Everest. According to the ministry, the process will be completed within two years. This is the first time that Nepali government is measuring the mountain.
According to the deputy spokesperson at the ministry Gopal Giri, as measurement of the height should be taken from sea level and with the reference to the height of some other places. Nepal generally takes the height of Kolkata, a port in India, as sea level for the measurement, said Giri. He further informed that the measurement of Namche, Taksindu and PK2 from sea level would be completed within the current fiscal year.
Clarifying the move to measure Everest, Giri said as Nepal has become technologically capable of measuring Mt Everest, there is no need to depend on the measurement that was taken long ago by a foreigner.
“China, in its border talks with Nepal, has always been demanding to measure the rock height without snow of Mt Everest,” said Giri.
BL Gulatee of British India Company had measured the highest peak in 1952 and put the height at 29,028 feet or 8,847.842 metres. In 1990, American geologist Wash Borne had claimed that the mountain measured 8,850 metres. However, the height of Mt Everest has been mentioned as 8,848.13 metres in the Nepal-China border treaty. China has been claiming that its measurement of the mountain’s rock height was 8,844.42 metres and 8,847.933 metres when measured with the snow deposit.
