For the ninth time, President Ram Baran Yadav has extended the deadline for the parties to nominate a PM candidate. The president consulted with leaders of the ruling alliance and the opposition on Thursday, and gave them until January 14 to come to consensus.

During the meeting, President Yadav expressed disappointment at the parties not being able to find agreement, and warned that he could head towards a different process if consensus wasn't reached this time.

The current impasse comes after Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai disagreed with the agreement brokered by his party's chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to make NC chairman Sushil Koirala the head of the next electoral government.
