The main opposition UML has hinted that it will not help to amend the new Constitution, saying it is not 'necessary' or 'relevant'.

On his return from Thailand on Monday, UML Chair KP Oli told journalists at Kathmandu airport that his party will not give in to 'pressure' to serve 'interests of others' by amending the Constitution.

Oli had gone to Thailand for medical treatment. He was ousted from power in July after the Maoists formed a new ruling coalition with the NC to address Madhesi grievances by amending the Constitution.

Madhesis have supported the NC-Maoist ruling coalition, but have refused to join the government unless the Constitution is amended. But without the UML's support, constitutional amendment is not possible.

Oli told reporters that the Constitution has already been amended once to address Madhesi concerns, and there is no possibility of another amendment anytime soon. "We have already addressed the Madhesi demands, and they do not have new demands," he said.
