The term of the high-level taskforce, formed to settle the contentious issues pertaining to constitution writing, will not be extended.
A meeting of the 27 political parties in the Constituent Assembly today agreed to sort out the problems on constitution writing through the constituent assembly and the constitutional committee instead of the taskforce.
Leader of the Nepali Congress and an assistant of the taskforce Ramesh Lekhak said the meeting of the 27 political parties decided not to extend the taskforce term, although important issues such as the form of governance, pluralism, electoral system and national flag remain unsettled.
The taskforce coordinated by the Chairman of the UCPN-Maoist Pushpa Kamal Dahal settled as many as 127 disputed issues out 220 issues.
The Maoists were against extension of the taskforce's term, arguing that the constitutional committee should be reinvigorated. However, the Nepali Congress and the UML were in favour of an extension.
