Enraged by the inordinate delay in reconstruction of the Old Baneshwor- Sinamangal road section, the locals here took to the streets on Friday, obstructing vehicular movement in the area. online2

The reconstruction of the road started two years ago as a part of the Kathmandu Valley Road Widening Project. However, the delay in construction has caused water and sewage pipes to leak along the road. Travelers have been forced to take detours and pedestrians have to maneuver their way around debris and pipes. online

With the onset of monsoon, the heavy rains have made the situation worse. The debris of walls and houses along the roadside that went down during the earthquake still needs to be removed. The roads have been clogged with water, and there are puddles and mud all over the road section.

Officials say works related to laying of Melamchi water pipes as one of the reasons for the delay, the installation however was recently finished. But the sewage lines, electricity poles, TV cables still have to be managed and few of the houses on either side of the road still need to be demolished.

According to Umesh Jha, spokesperson for Department of Road, the earthquake too delayed the process. "Our engineers were required to go to the affected districts to prepare the post disaster need assessment and many workers fled the capital after the quake due to which there were shortage of manpower and hence the delay," he said.
