The Election Commission revoked the candidacy of UCPN (Maoist) Proportional Representation candidates Bal Krishna Dhungel and Usha Shah Fakir on Wednesday.
A complaint had been lodged against murder-convict Dhungel by Ram Kumri Jhankri, CPN-UML's PR candidate. Bal Krishna Dhungel was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Ujjan Shrestha in Okhaldhunga in 1998. The sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court on appeal in 2010.
Similarly Mohamed Zakir Hussain from UCPN (Maoist) had filed a complaint against Fakir who is a member of the National Muslim Commission. The Election Commission Act doesn't allow high ranking officials to contest for election.
The Election Commission had received complaints against seven candidates including Bal Krishna Dhungel, Usha Shaha Fakir, Anita Kumari Pariyar, Dhana Maya BK (Khanal), Hari Ram Shripaili of UCPN (Maoist), Rita Thapa Magar of Socialist People's Party and Bimala Laxmi Shah of League Nepal Peace Party. The commission however didn't find enough ground to cancel the candidacy of the five other candidates.
