Following the death of Shiva Poudel, the Chitwan district president of the Nepali Congress-aligned Tarun Dal, NC cadres have shut down Chitwan and parts of Kathmandu.
Poudel was critically injured in an attack by a group UML-affiliated Youth Association Nepal cadres, who were also in custody, inside Bharatpur jail on 6 December. He died while undergoing treatment at Neuro Hospital, Bansbari, Kathmandu, on early Saturday morning. He had been shifted to Kathmandu from Bharatpur on Wednesday after his condition deteriorated.
Poudel was detained on accusation of a murder. The chief district officer of Chitwan, district police chief and the jailer were suspended after the prison clash.
Security has been tightened in the district in view of the possibility of violence during the protests.
