The first meeting of the board of directors of the recently-formed National Reconstruction Authority on Monday decided to begin the post-April earthquake reconstruction work from 16 January.

Nepal marks National Earthquake Safety Day on 16 January every year to commemorate the 1934 earthquake that had devastated Kathmandu and other parts of the country.

The meeting chaired by Prime Minister KP Oli decided to carry out a five-month-long national reconstruction campaign from 16 January to 25 April 2016 –the first anniversary of the recent devastating earthquake that killed nearly 9,000 people in central Nepal.

The campaign will be simultaneously inaugurated by PM and President from two earthquake-hit areas. While President Bidya Bhandari will launch the campaign from the earthquake-damaged Rani Pokhari temple site, PM Oli will do so from Bungamati, Lalitpur.

The meeting also approved the reconstruction authority's organisational structure. The authority will have its headquarters in Kathmandu and six regional offices for the 14 worst-affected districts.

The meeting also approved a budget of Rs 190 million for administrative cost, according to the authority's secretary Madhu Sudan Adhikari.
