The Election Commission has met Electoral Council Chairman Khil Raj Regmi to discuss extending the voter registration deadline.

In return Regmi told the EC that the High Level Political Mechanism was in favour of including as many voters as possible without disturbing the election calendar.

Both Regmi’s government and the EC have yet not discussed legal difficulties such a decision would face, but talks at Singha Darbar on Sunday were positive. There have been calls from parties in favour of November’s election to include those who were left out of registration processes in July.

The final voters’ list compiled by the EC contains the names of 12,300,000 voters, 5,000,000 less than those who were eligible to vote in 2008’s CA elections. Among those left out, 3,000,000 are living abroad and 1,300,000 did not apply for voter ID cards.
