After seven failed attempts in the prime ministerial elections, the UCPN (Maoist) is inching towards withdrawing their candidacy from the PM election.

The party's central committee meeting that concluded on Sunday took a decision to facilitate the formation of a new government. “We do not want more of these inconclusive elections,” Dina Nath Sharma, Maoist spokesperson said.

However, the party will consult with the CA members, who supported them during these elections, to make the final decision.

With the UCPN (Maoist) no longer contending for elections, NC prime ministerial candidate Ram Chandra Poudel will lead the government in the new coalition.

As the party meeting assessed low prospects of the government under their leadership, it has decided to go to the public with slogans for a timely constitution and national independence. The protest will begin on 17 September and will last for a period of a month.

Sharma said the meeting also discussed the violation of the fundamental rights of Krishna Bahadur Mahara in the release of the audio tape that consists of a telephone conversation between Mahara and a Chinese speaking man. In the tape, Mahara asks for Rs 500 million to buy votes required for Maoist candidate Pushpa Kamal Dahal to win in the ongoing election.

The meeting also accused the Indian and US embassies of working in cahoots with the Nepal Army to create the audio tape scandal, calling it growing ‘foreign interference’ in Nepal’s internal affairs.

According to Sharma, the party will organise mass assemblies and interactions, and mobilise the public against foreign interference from 17 September till 18 October.

The meeting also decided to merge three separate documents presented by party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and vice chairs Mohan Baidhya and Baburam Bhattarai. The reports will be given to the district leadership to be finalised, before presenting it to a big meeting on 23 October.
