UN Under Secretary General Jeffrey Feltman met Prime Minister KP Oli on Friday amidst a political crisis that has continued for over five months.

The UN political chief also met Madhesi leaders who have been spearheading protests against Nepal's new constitution since August 2015.

Feltman arrived in Kathmandu on Thursday as a special envoy of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for a three-day visit. He also called on President Bidya Bhandari and held a meeting with Nepal Army Chief Rajendra Chhetri.

The UN envoy's visit comes at a time when the ruling parties and the Madhesi Morcha appear close to a deal. Madhesi leaders have said that they could accept an all-party mechanism to resolve dispute over federal boundaries if a consensus is forged on its Terms of Reference (TOR).

Apart from proposing an all-party mechanism to resolve demarcation row, the big parties have also tabled the first constitutional amendment bill.

The UN envoy reportedly drew Madhesi leaders' attention to a humanitarian crisis that is unfolding in Nepal due to protests at Nepal-India check-points. Madhesi leaders said they were forced to stage sit-ins at border points because of police crackdown on protests in other parts.
