Kailali -- In yet another incident of Violence Against Woman (VAW), a woman has been burned to death by her own husband in a remote village of Kailali district.
Police have arrested Mahendra Kathariya of Ghusari village in Joshipur VDC-8 of Kailali district on the charge of burning his own wife, 33-year-old Mira Kathariya, to death.
According to police inspector Bharat Shah, Chief of Bhajani Area Police Office of Kailali, Kathariya set his wife ablaze by sprinkling her body with kerosene and wheat chaff on the night of 12 January.
Kathariya, when interrogated by police, has confessed to have killed his wife in a fit of rage.
"She did not come home for seven days; I searched everywhere to find her," DSP Bishwo Khadka quoted Kathayat as telling the police. "After seven days, I saw her drunk and lying unconsciously on the floor. So, I set fire to her."
According to police, Kathariya was sick of his wife's drinking habit.
Locals had informed the police about the incident when they saw the charred body of Mira. She was already dead when police reached there.
According to DSP Khadka, Mira's father lodged a written complaint against Kathariya on Wednesday.
Cases of VAW surface frequently in rural villages of the Tarai. Last year, two women were burned to death in the adjacent district of Banke. In the same district, a young Muslim woman burnt alive by her husband is still struggling to recover from her burn injuries.
